  • Total fertility rate

The total fertility rate (TFR) is the average number of children that a woman would bear throughout her childbearing lifespan if the female population experienced the age-specific fertility rate of the calendar year in question. One speaks of generation replacement when the number of girls in the generation of children is the same as the number of women in the generation of the parents. Because of the ratio of male births and the low infant mortality rate, the level of replacement is achieved when women have, on average, 2.1 children in developed countries.
