Teaching activities at
University of St. Gallen (HSG)
Dr. Hans Groth has been serving as a guest lecturer at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) since 2009. He holds annual classes on the interdisciplinary theme of “Megatrend: Global Demographic Change” for master students and introduces them into the topic of demographic change and its impact on social, economic and financial affairs in the 21st century.
More specifically, challenges as well as opportunities for different regions/countries with regard to business and society are explored in the context of this course. In addition, Dr. Groth engages students into a discussion on future models to maximize health and education benefits for so far unprecedented life spans – human life spans with more and better years than ever before in the history of mankind.
Currently witnessing a debate of ageing Europe among policymakers, a thorough investigation and research conducted by the young generation is not only needed for creative solutions but also beneficial to integrate the young generation into the civil debate. Convinced that the implications for future governance structures will be great for the individual, the family as well as the civil society level, it is important to engage people of different age groups into such imperative discussions pertaining to their future.
An impressive portfolio of student work from 2009 - 2018 classes is available below.
In November 2010, he integrated four students from his course into a panel discussion at the WDA Forum Expert Symposium “Upcoming Demographic Change in Islamic Countries”. This symposium took place in Zürich, Switzerland and was largely sponsored by Swiss Re. Together with these students a special WDA position Paper has been published (see below).
His 2019 class will start with an introduction lecture and the assignment of the project work on September 24 and October 1, 2019. As per the schedule, the students will present their group work from November 4-6, 2019 in a block seminar format.
